Location: Microsoft Executive Briefing Center (Building 33)

Cosponsored By: Carnegie Mellon Seattle Alumni Chapter

Have you ever wondered how your home would be if it was designed by Microsoft designers and technologists? Wonder no more as the Carnegie Mellon Seattle Alumni Chapter has been granted access to the "Home of the Future" tour, typically available only to executive customers. We expect a great turnout, so we have two tour dates reserved for 20 people apiece. Visitors to the Microsoft Home will experience consumer technology innovations that are likely to emerge in Microsoft and partner products over the next decade. The house, located inside the Executive Briefing Center on Microsoft's Redmond campus, presents these technologies through hands-on scenarios that highlight the following themes: Place. A series of demonstrations showcase how software, services, and devices can combine to deliver timely and relevant information to people based on their location - whether inside the home or nearby. For example, display technology in the neighborhood bus stop that provides continuous route and arrival updates, or can even alert a user when someone they know arrives at the bus stop. Participation. Reflecting consumers' widespread desire to more directly shape their sources of information and entertainment, the Microsoft Home features several emerging technologies designed to enhance user's self-expression. For instance, a teenager's bedroom portrays addressable wallpaper that employs organic light-emitting diode technology to display artwork, video clips, and web pages. Discovery. Technology systems throughout the Microsoft Home prioritize huge volumes of information, media, and content choices. These systems can filter through myriad content sources - from thousand of TV channels, news reports, email messages, and electronic documents to music files, on-demand videos and blog entries - to intelligently bring users the information and entertainment on their schedule and terms. When: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 (OR) Tuesday, September 1, 2009 5:00 p.m. (please be there at least 5 minutes in advance) Where: Microsoft Executive Briefing Center (Building 33) 33 Microsoft Way Redmond, WA 98052 Cost: $15 per person. Tepper Seattle Chapter Fall Dinner

Hello Seattle Tepper Alumni! Aside from the crazy market activity over the last few weeks, I hope everyone is managing to enjoy the fall season. In lieu of a formal fall Tepper alumni event, I have reserved a room at the Black Bottle for the 1st Annual Tepper Fall Dinner. While there won't be a speaker or free Tepper-ware, I do promise a fun time with friends and fellow alumni over drinks and dinner. Black Bottle is located in Belltown and markets itself as . . . Event Date: 5/17/2006 5:30 PM
Location: Hyatt Regency

MIT Presents: Technology Sales in China Bumps, Bruises and Breakthrough Decisions May 17, 2006 According to the Washington Post, trade with China was worth more than $20 billion last year to Washington State. In his recent meeting with Governor Christine Gregoire, Chinese President Hu said he did not choose to visit Seattle simply because it is the closest major U.S. city to China. "It is also because your state enjoys very good cooperative relations with my country," he said. Whether it’s manufacturing or marketing, NW companies are among the first in the US to break into the Chinese market. Beyond the headlines and huge deals with Boeing and Microsoft, China is also shaking hands with a host of small and mid-size technology firms producing everything from device programmers to software. Successful deals are often the product of a complex courtship played out on a vast stage with numerous acts. On May 17th, we will explore how several mid-size NW companies are bringing their products to market in this complicated environment. Our presenters and panelists will share their personal experiences developing a presence in China, including the wrong turns, U-turns and turning points. This event is also open to Seattle Business School Alliance member schools. We will enjoy wine, hors d'oeuvres and good company before the show, as Seattle Rep's Artistic Director shares with us the process for putting together a season, the highs and lows of introducing new plays to the stage, and general insights on producing and directing live theater. Q&A will follow. After hearing David's insights, we will then be entertained by a lively and comic production of RESTORATION COMEDY, making its debut at the Rep. ABOUT THE PLAY Their names are Loveless, Lord Foppington, Sir Novelty Fashion, Worthy, Hoyden—and they are just what you’d expect them to be. Playing games with each others loves, lives, and livelihoods is their one delightfully wicked occupation. Playwright Amy Freed (The Beard of Avon) has stayed true to late-17th-century style (inspired by Vanbrugh’s The Relapse and Cibber’s Love’s Last Shift) to create the naughty romp that is Restoration Comedy—a perfect antidote to traditional holiday fare! WHY YOU SHOULD SEE THIS PLAY The Restoration was marked by lavish style: opulence and decadence were the order of the day. Restoration Comedy will embody this gorgeous period of dress and style with costumes designed by Anna Oliver (The Beard of Avon, The Constant Wife). With Hugh Landwehr as scenic designer (Anna in the Tropics, A Midsummer Night's Dream) and lighting design by Peter Maradudin (Anna in the Tropics, Beauty of the Father), this production promises a sumptuous visual feast. Restoration Comedy will also star favorite Seattle Rep actors Laurence Ballard, Suzanne Bouchard, Bhama Roget, and others. ABOUT DAVID ESBJORNSON David Esbjornson is an award-winning director and producer who has worked throughout the United States in regional theatres and on Broadway, and has established strong and productive relationships with some of the profession's top playwrights, actors, and companies. For seven years (1992-1999) he was artistic director of New York's Classic Stage Company, and since leaving that post he has become one of country's most sought after freelance directors. With a list of production credits steeped in the classics from those years at CSC and as a guest director in such leading regional theatres as the Guthrie Theater, David has also established himself as an interpreter of choice for playwrights such as Tony Kushner, Edward Albee, and Arthur Miller. "If there is a hallmark of Esbjornson's work," wrote the Village Voice, "...it's been (his) collaboration with adventuresome writers." Among the world premieres to David's credit are the first production of Tony Kushner's Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, and the first staged presentation of Perestroika, both at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco, which

Location: Microsoft Corporation,Main Campus Building #34, Quinalt Room

Speaker: Peter Boatwright, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Marketing at the Tepper School of Business

You are invited to mark your calendar to join us on Thursday, September 15, 2005 for a special alumni reception and presentation by Dr. Peter Boatwright on Managing Creativity to Achieve Pragmatic Innovation. It will be held at the Microsoft campus in Redmond in the Quinalt Room in Building #34. The networking reception will be from 5:30-7:00 p.m. with the talk beginning at 7:00 p.m. Peter Boatwright, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Marketing at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. He is an author of the new book, The Design of Things to Come: How Ordinary People Create Extraordinary Products, (co-authored with Jonathan Cagan and Craig M. Vogel). In his talk he will discuss how the next opportunity for a competitive edge is to be found in creating products that are more innovative than those of the competition. The most important issues are how to produce innovation and how to repeatedly generate innovative products. Innovation is the flower of diligent work - work that uncovers the potential that a product can achieve for its users, producing comprehensive solutions that consumers respond to emotionally, cognitively, and then economically. They involve procedures that can be learned, used, and adopted by anyone. Anyone, at least, who is willing to intelligently take the uncertainty head on, to risk and endure failure in the disciplined quest for a brilliant product or service. All Carnegie Mellon alumni and their guests are invited to attend. The registration charge for the presentation and reception is $10.00 and must be paid in advance online at: www.tepper.cmu.edu/alumni/sea. Attire in business casual. Our sincere appreciation to Microsoft for hosting the presentation for us and for the Office of Alumni Relations at the Tepper School for sponsoring the refreshments.
