Michigan: Judgment - How Winning Leaders Make Great Calls

Location: The McGraw Hill Building

Time: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business New York City Alumni Chapter

Speaker: Professor Noel Tichy

Noel Tichy and Warren Bennis have each spent decades studying and teaching leadership and advising top CEOs such as Jack Welch and Howard Schultz. Now, in their first collaboration they offer a powerful framework for making tough calls when the stakes are high and the right path is far from obvious. Based on extensive research with key leaders including AG Lafley CEO of Procter & Gamble, Jeff Immelt CEO of General Electric, Jim McNerney CEO of Boeing, David Novak CEO of YUM! Brands and Joel Klein Chancellor of New York City Schools, they show how to recognize the critical moment before a judgment call, when swift and decisive action is essential, and also how to execute a decision after the call.

A leader’s judgment can make or break the organization. The best leaders make a high percentage of good calls (whom to hire, what strategy to implement, or how to handle a crisis) at times when it counts the most.

But practicing good judgment isn’t easy, because the concept is murky. Is judgment common sense? Gut instinct? Luck?

Tichy and Bennis contend that judgment is none of these things. Instead, it’s a three-part process:

Preparing: Framing the issue that will demand a judgment call, ensuring that your team members understand why the decision is important, and tapping ideas from stakeholders

Making the call: Arriving at your decision and explaining it

Executing: carrying out your decision while learning and adjusting along the way

Each phase is crucial and each offers "redo loops"- opportunities to correct missteps. By mastering the judgment process, you make decision that secure widespread commitment to results.

Join Professor Noel Tichy in association with McGraw Hill, the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club and business executives from the area in an evening of dialogue about making tough calls.

**Registration Required / Complimentary Admission** To RSVP, please contact Ida Faye Webster at 734-998-6353 or idafaye@umich.edu.

________________________________________________

Tepper alumni in financial services and investment banking are invited to an alumni reception with Dr, Chester Spatt on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Citi, Inc. on the 28th Floor of One Sansome Street in San Francisco.

The difficulties started with relatively high defaults in adjustable rate subprime loans. Professor Spatt will highlight the roles of asset manager incentives, credit rating agencies and the nature of market transparency in contributing to the difficulty in the marketplace. He will discuss why the turbulence migrated to a broader set of investment classes and to overseas investors and conclude with a discussion of the potential for systemic risk and the consequences of moral hazard.

It is our hope to continue to strengthen our network of Tepper and Carnegie Mellon alumni in the financial services field in the San Francisco Bay Area similar to our Tepper Wall Street Network in New York. Tepper Alumni Wine Tasting Day in Napa Valley

Location: O'Brien Family Vineyards

Time: 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business 2007, San Francisco Alumni Chapter

Speaker: Kenneth B. Dunn, PhD, Dean and Professor of Finance, Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University

You are invited to attend a special Alumni Wine Tasting Party on Sunday, June 24, 2007 in the beautiful southern Napa Valley at an award-winning vineyard owned by alumnus, Bart O'Brien (MSIA '81) and his wife, Barb. Joining us from campus will be Dr. Ken Dunn, Dean of the Tepper School of Business and his wife, Pam, as well as Dr. Art Boni, Director of the Don Jones Center for Entrepreneurship, and his wife, Jan. They are looking forward to a relaxing afternoon with you.

The afternoon will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will include a buffet style dinner, Chardonnay and Merlot wine tasting, a winery tour, a winemaking lecture by winemaker, barrel to barrel tasting and comparison and a stroll through the beautiful vineyard.

The O'Brien Family Vineyard is owned by Bart and Barb O'Brien, who purchased the former Costello winery from John Costello in March 2000. Bart is a 1981 graduate from the Tepper School and a seasoned entrepreneur and inspirational leader who has been on the founding team of three companies; one which is growing successfully in a pre-IPO stage, another which was acquired for $250 million, and a third which went public with an initial market capitalization of $1.8 billion.

The winery was built in 1978 and produced approximately 8,400 cases of Chardonnay annually. The winery is unusual in that it is entirely self-contained, with everything required to turn grapes into wine, including a bottling line. The family-owned vineyard produces a wonderful Chardonnay, a rich, voluptuous Merlot and the award-winning Seduction, a Bordeaux-style blend.

Registration is limited so we advise you to RSVP as soon as possible online at: http://www.tepper.cmu.edu/alumni/sf

The cost is $45.00 per person which includes a catered picnic and an afternoon of wine drinking (more than just tasting). The special student rate is $35.00.

You are more than welcome to make it a day for your family. Often couples arrange an overnight stay at a nearby inn. Children are free, however, we do ask that you RSVP for them so that we know how many to anticipate. We will have ping pong, basketball hoop, and movies for their entertainment. Please include their ages as well.

Lave's published papers include, "Evaluating Automobile Fuel/Propulsion System Technologies," "Predicting Human Carcinogenicity," "Market Power in Deregulated Wholesale Electricity Markets," and "Bolstering the Security of the Electric Power System."
