While there won't be a speaker or free Tepper-ware, I do promise a fun time with friends and fellow alumni over drinks and dinner. Black Bottle is located in Belltown and markets itself as . . . ". . . a casual tavern committed to great eating and drinking at fair prices. Every dish is made fresh-to-order using local and sustainable ingredients whenever possible. We have a full bar and hard-working wines. The atmosphere is convivial and uncluttered; a modern design in a century old building. Our service standard is efficient and informal." MSCF Alumni Dinner in London with Dr. Steve Shreve
Location: Haz Restaurant Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business MSCF, United Kingdom Alumni Chapter
Speaker: Steve Shreve, PhD. Orion Hoch Professor of Mathematical Sciences and a member of the MSCF Steering Committee, Carnegie Mellon University Alumni from Carnegie Mellon's MSCF Program are invited to special dinner in London with Dr. Steve Shreve on Monday, July 14, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Haz Restaurant, 9 Cutler Street in London.
Alumni and summer interns are asked to register online at: www.tepper.cmu.edu/alumni/uk
Dr. Shreve is the Orion Hoch Professor of Mathematical Sciences and a member of the MSCF Steering Committee, at Carnegie Mellon University. He came to Carnegie Mellon in 1980 as assistant professor of mathematical sciences and became a full professor in 1989. He received a master's degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in mathematics in 1977 from the University of Illinois. His bachelor's degree in German is from West Virginia University. Before joining Carnegie Mellon, Shreve held appointments at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Delaware.
Shreve's work in quantitative finance has established new methods for pricing exotic derivative securities, including knock-out options, a type of derivative security whose payoff can see a large jump as a result of a small change in the underlying asset price. Shreve has contributed to the basic understanding of convertible bond prices and dealt with mathematical models of markets in which financial risk cannot be hedged using available securities. While at Carnegie Mellon, Shreve joined John Lehoczky, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, to apply his work in process engineering to financial problems. Together, they built on the work of Nobel Laureate Robert Merton to show how to form optimal portfolios of stocks in an unstable, unpredictable climate.
In 1991, Shreve founded the doctoral program in computational finance. Students in the program take some of the courses in the MSCF program, intern at banks, and in their later years, serve as teaching assistants in the Masters program. Dr. Shreve also teaches two-day executive education courses for investment banks and serves as Advisory Editor of "Finance and Stochastics." He has co-authored a number of texts including "Brownian Motion and Stochastic Calculus" and "Methods of Mathematical Finance," and most recently the two-volume work, "Stochastic Calculus for Finance," based on his teaching in the Masters program in Computational Finance. | | Directions: Haz Restaurant, 9 Cutler Street, E1 7DJ; http://www.hazrestaurant.co.uk/; 0207 929 7925 |

Alumni Speed Networking Night at Red Sky
Location: The Red Sky Bar Time: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business New York City, Chicago GSB Alumni Chapter & Ross School of Business Alumni Chapter You are invited to a special night of Speed Networking with alumni from three of the leading business schools in the world on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the Red Sky Bar and Lounge at 29th and Madison Avenue. Join alumni from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon Metro New York Alumni Chapter, the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan Alumni Club of New York and The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business Club of New York for a unique, interactive night of making new friends and professional contacts.
The reception will begin at 6:30 and the Speed Networking will start at 7:15 p.m. and go until 8:00 p.m. After the Speed Networking it will open up to a general reception. We have the entire 2nd floor of Red Sky to ourselves and the famous roof deck with awesome views of the city will open around 8:00 p.m.
Due to the nature of the event, registration is limited so sign up soon if you would like to attend. The cost is a nominal $10.00 which must be paid in advance online to secure a reservation. A cash bar will be available. Make sure to bring your business cards!
Speed networking is based on the idea that the usual way businesses gain new contacts or clients is by networking – meeting to talk to people and exchange ideas. Traditional networking events, like conferences and receptions, are often not as productive because people usually tend to relate with those they already know, and wouldn’t normally walk up to absolute strangers, even though there are likely to be people in the room who would make valuable contacts.
In a speed networking event, people are given a structured environment in which they can talk to people they wouldn’t otherwise have come into contact with, and can quickly decide whether there is a mutual interest without the need for polite or unnecessarily long conversations. In our event, alumni will be given 3.5 minutes to talk to a potential contact, and are then will be moved on to another alumni. At the end of the session, business cards can be exchanged, thereby sowing the seeds for a new professional relationship or even a friendship. In these challenging economic times, building a strong professional network is more important than ever.

Annual Alumni Wine Tasting Event in Napa Valley
Location: O'Brien Estate Time: 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business 2008, San Francisco Alumni Chapter You are invited to attend our annual Alumni Wine Tasting Event on Sunday, June 22, 2008 in the beautiful southern Napa Valley at an award-winning vineyard owned by alumnus, Bart O'Brien (MSIA '81) and his wife, Barb. Joining us from campus will be Dr. Art Boni, Director of the Don Jones Center for Entrepreneurship, and his wife, Jan. We are looking forward to a relaxing afternoon with you and the Tepper alumni community.
The afternoon will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will include a buffet style lunch, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Seduction wine tasting, a winery tour, and a stroll through the beautiful vineyard.
O'Brien Estate is owned by Bart and Barb O'Brien, who purchased the former Costello winery from John Costello in March 2000. Bart is a 1981 graduate from the Tepper School and a seasoned entrepreneur and inspirational leader who has been on the founding team of three companies; one which is growing successfully in a pre-IPO stage, another which was acquired for $250 million, and a third which went public with an initial market capitalization of $1.8 billion.
The winery was built in 1978 and produced approximately 8,400 cases of Chardonnay annually. The winery is unusual in that it is entirely self-contained, with everything required to turn grapes into wine, including a bottling line. The family-owned vineyard produces a wonderful Chardonnay, a rich, voluptuous Merlot and the award-winning Seduction, a Bordeaux-style blend.
Registration is limited so we advise you to RSVP as soon as possible online at: www.tepper.cmu.edu/alumni/sf
The cost is $35.00 per person (payment in advance via credit card or check by June 18, 2008) which includes a catered picnic and an afternoon of wine drinking (more than just tasting). Payment after June 18, 2008 and on-site is $45.00. We also have a special rate for Tepper School summer interns of $25.00.
You are more than welcome to make it a day for your family. Often couples arrange an overnight stay at a nearby inn. Children under 16 years of age are free, however, we do ask that you RSVP for them so that we know how many to anticipate. We will have a number of activities for their. Please include their ages as well.

Speaker: W.R. TischAll Tepper Alumni are invited to join with Carnegie Mellon alumni in New York for a special night of wine tasting on Thusrday, May 15, 2008 at The Sage Theater at 711 Seventh Avenue.
We will have wine writer, speaker and Squirrel Hill Native W.R. Tisch taking us on a journey through what he calls a "Trend-O-Licious" evening of wine and food that would make even Bacchus green with envy. This one-time editor for "Wine Enthusiast" will teach us about what's hip and happening in wine today, from zippy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and cutting-edge blends to red-hot Spanish reds, Oregon Pinot Noir and Aussie Shiraz. We'll choose up some exquisitely paired foods and be all set for a fun night of socializing, networking and (of course!) learning.
W.R. Tisch, known in the wine trade simply as Tish, has been writing and speaking about wine and food for more than a decade. As editor of Wine Enthusiast Magazine from 1988 to 1998, he re-worked the publication to position it as a spunkier alternative to other wine magazines. Tish also has written on wine and food for publications including In Style, Details, Private Clubs, Beverage Media and Williams-Sonoma Taste, and a number of websites. In addition to teaching at The Wine program at The Institute for Culinary Education, he is also auctioneer for the annual Hudson Valley Wine Showcase & Auction.

Carnegie Mellon Alumni Reception and Alumnae Panel with Dr. Linda C. Babcock
Location: Deutsche Bank, 60 Wall Street Time: 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business New York City Alumni Chapter
Speaker: Linda C. Babcock, PhD, James Mellon Walton Professor of Economics at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University You are invited to attend a special Carnegie Mellon Alumni reception and panel presentation on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Our speaker will be noted scholar and author, Dr. Linda C. Babcock, the James Mellon Walton Professor of Economics at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Babcock will speak on the topic of her newest book: Ask for It: How Women Can Use the Power of Negotiation to Get What They Want. The reception is being sponsored by Deutsche Bank and will be held at their auditorium at 60 Wall Street in New York.
In their book, Women Don’t Ask, Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever uncovered a startling fact: even women who negotiate brilliantly on behalf of others often hold back when it comes to negotiating for themselves. They find that men are about four times as likely as women to initiate negotiations to ask for what they want. In their new book, Ask for it, Babcock and Laschever explain why it’s essential for women to ask and teaches them how to ask effectively. In this presentation, Professor Babcock will discuss key findings from both books and outline a four-phrase program to improve your negotiation skills.
Joining Dr. Babcock there will be a panel of alumnae who will discuss her presentation and critical issues for women in the marketplace. Among the panelists will be:
Carol Ballock (HNZ/MPM '89), Managing Director, Corporate/Financial Practice, New York Burson-Marsteller
Stephanie Ruhle, Managing Director, Global Markets - Equities, Deutsche Bank
Pam Zilly (MSIA '77), Senior Managing Director, The Blackstone Group; Business Board of Advisors, Tepper School of Business.
