Tepper Alumni Panel on Healthcare Reform
Location: The Rivers Club Time: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business Biopharma, Pittsburgh Alumni Chapter You are invited to attend a special alumni panel discussion on Health Care Reform on Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at The Rivers Club in Pittsburgh. We will begin with a networking reception at 6:00 p.m. followed by the panel discussion at 7:00 p.m.
Health Reform will bring unprecedented change to the US healthcare industry and create both winners and losers. Please join us for an open discussion of the opportunities for businesses and investors as well as the impact public policy. We will focus on answering questions such as:
· How will pharmaceutical companies need to position themselves with changes to insurance benefits? · What is the impact of additional primary care demand and what efficiencies and investments will be needed to accommodate the new demand? · What technologies could take advantage of expected increases in hospital capital budgets? · Where is the market discounting stocks due to current uncertainty in managed care and pharmaceuticals?
Our discussion will be led by a panel of experts who have cross-industry expertise in healthcare and life sciences. Among our alumni panelists will be:
David Betts (MBA '02), Senior Manager, Strategy & Operations, Healthcare, Deloitte Consulting
Donald R. Fischer, MD, MBA, Senior Vice President, Highmark Inc.
Tal Heppenstall Jr. (MSIA '85), Treasurer, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Judith R. Lave, Ph.D., Department Chairperson and Director MHA Program and JD/MPH Program and Director PA Medicaid Policy Center at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health

Microsoft's "Home of the Future" Exclusive Tour - Tour 2
Location: Microsoft Executive Briefing Center (Building 33) Time: 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business Seattle Alumni Chapter
Co-Sponsored By: Carnegie Mellon Seattle Alumni ChapterHave you ever wondered how your home would be if it was designed by Microsoft designers and technologists? Wonder no more as the Carnegie Mellon Seattle Alumni Chapter has been granted access to the "Home of the Future" tour, typically available only to executive customers.
We expect a great turnout, so we have two tour dates reserved for 20 people apiece.
Visitors to the Microsoft Home will experience consumer technology innovations that are likely to emerge in Microsoft and partner products over the next decade. The house, located inside the Executive Briefing Center on Microsoft's Redmond campus, presents these technologies through hands-on scenarios that highlight the following themes:
Place. A series of demonstrations showcase how software, services, and devices can combine to deliver timely and relevant information to people based on their location - whether inside the home or nearby. For example, display technology in the neighborhood bus stop that provides continuous route and arrival updates, or can even alert a user when someone they know arrives at the bus stop.
Participation. Reflecting consumers' widespread desire to more directly shape their sources of information and entertainment, the Microsoft Home features several emerging technologies designed to enhance user's self-expression. For instance, a teenager's bedroom portrays addressable wallpaper that employs organic light-emitting diode technology to display artwork, video clips, and web pages.
Discovery. Technology systems throughout the Microsoft Home prioritize huge volumes of information, media, and content choices. These systems can filter through myriad content sources - from thousand of TV channels, news reports, email messages, and electronic documents to music files, on-demand videos and blog entries - to intelligently bring users the information and entertainment on their schedule and terms.
When: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 (OR) Tuesday, September 1, 2009 5:00 p.m. (please be there at least 5 minutes in advance)
Where: Microsoft Executive Briefing Center (Building 33) 33 Microsoft Way Redmond, WA 98052
Cost: $15 per person. Each registrant is allowed to bring one guest.

Annual Tepper School Alumni Wine Tasting Afternoon in Napa Valley
Location: O'Brien Estate Time: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business San Francisco Alumni Chapter
Speaker: Bart (MSIA '81) and Barb O'Brien You are invited to attend our annual Alumni Wine Tasting Reception on Sunday, July 19, 2009 in the beautiful southern Napa Valley at the award-winning vineyard owned by alumnus, Bart O'Brien (MSIA '81) and his wife, Barb. Joining us from campus will be Dean Ken Dunn and his wife, Pam, as well as John Sengenberger, Director of Alumni Relations for the Tepper School. We are looking forward to a relaxing afternoon with you and the Tepper alumni community.
The afternoon will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will include a buffet style lunch, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Seduction wine tasting, a winery tour, and a stroll through the beautiful vineyard.
O'Brien Estate is owned by Bart and Barb O'Brien, who purchased the former Costello winery from John Costello in March 2000. Bart is a 1981 graduate from the Tepper School and a seasoned entrepreneur and inspirational leader who has been on the founding team of three companies; one which is growing successfully in a pre-IPO stage, another which was acquired for $250 million, and a third which went public with an initial market capitalization of $1.8 billion.
The winery was built in 1978 and produces approximately 8,400 cases of Chardonnay annually. The winery is unusual in that it is entirely self-contained, with everything required to turn grapes into wine, including a bottling line. The family-owned vineyard produces a wonderful Chardonnay, a rich, voluptuous Merlot and the award-winning Seduction, a Bordeaux-style blend.
Registration is limited so we advise you to RSVP as soon as possible online at: www.tepper.cmu.edu/alumni/sf. The event is sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Area Alumni Chapter of the Tepper School of Business and open to all Carnegie Mellon alumni and their guests.
The cost is $45.00 per person, in advance or $50.00 at the door. The fee includes a catered picnic and an afternoon of wine drinking (more than just tasting). We also have a special rate for Tepper School summer interns of $25.00.
You are more than welcome to make it a day for your family. Often couples arrange an overnight stay at a nearby inn. Children under 16 years of age are free, however, we do ask that you RSVP for them so that we know how many to anticipate. We will have a number of activities for younger children including a Slip 'N Slide so bring along their suits. Please include your children's ages when you register.

6:00pm-6:30pm: Mingle and Mixer 6:30pm-7:30pm: Dialogue with Steve Etter and Q/A 7:30pm-8:00pm: Mingle and Mixer
Stephen Etter visits Seattle Haas Alumni Network to discuss implications of the current environment to participants in the middle market private equity arena. He will combine his professorial work at Haas with his every day experience as a partner in Greyrock, a junior capital/private equity fund.
Stephen will take the audience through the stakeholders involved in the world of private equity including: a) institutional investors (family offices, university endowments, insurance companies), b) the private equity fund managers, c) the financial service providers to the industry (banks, finance companies, accountants & lawyers), and d) the operating companies invested in by the private equity funds.
The event should be fun and entertaining if his teaching reviews are any indication of what to expect. He is outspoken and opinionated which should service as a great back drop for lively discussions.
Afterwards there will be an open session for questions about Haas - the State of Haas with its new Dean, the student population, the direction of the School, and student-athlete questions (Stephen also serves as a Faculty Fellow to Cal Football, Men's Water Polo and Women's Basketball).
Stephen Etter is an active alum of Cal. He has been a Lecturer of Corporate Finance for the past 14 years, teaching UGBA 131 Corporate Finance for 28 consecutive semesters. He has twice received the Earl F. Cheit Teacher of the Year Award, the Haas Cal Award in recognition of his Exceptional Contribution by an Adjunct Professor and gave the Haas commencement address in 2007. He also currently serves on the Audit Committee for the Trustees of the UC Berkeley Foundation which manages the university's gifts and endowments.
In his day job, Stephen is a Co-Founding Partner of Greyrock Capital Group. Greyrock has $350 million in junior capital (subordinated debt and private equity) under management which it utilizes to finance buyouts, recapitalizations and the internal growth needs of middle market companies. Stephen and his Greyrock Partners have over 140 years of relevant experience and have invested in over 100 companies in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, consumer wholesale, building materials, industrial equipment and service businesses.
Prior to founding Greyrock in 2002 with his partners, Stephen held positions at Bank of America, GE Capital, Barclay's Bank and Citicorp where he focused on senior and mezzanine debt. From 1983 to 1987 he worked for Price Waterhouse, during which time he obtained his CPA.
He received his undergraduate degree and MBA from the Haas School of Business, and has served as a Director of the San Francisco Giants Community Fund the last 11 years. | | For Further Information: http://www.acteva.com/go/haas-sea | | Directions: Attachmate

Carnegie Mellon Professor and Tepper Alumnus to Speak on Energy and Environment Intersections
Location: Trinity Commons Time: 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business Cleveland Alumni Chapter
Co-Sponsored By: Carnegie Mellon Northeast Ohio Alumni Chapter
Speaker: Dr. H. Scott Matthews (CIT '92, TPR '96, '99), fellow alumnus, Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Engineering and Public Policy, and Research Director of the Green Design Institute Dr. H. Scott Matthews (CIT '92, TPR '96, '99), fellow alumnus, Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Engineering and Public Policy, and Research Director of the Green Design Institute will speak to us about "Energy and Environment Intersections."
We're hearing lots of talk about the need for energy policies, whether or not to drill in Alaska, switching to ethanol fuels, using more wind power, etc. U.S. energy sources, generation, and consumption are interconnected from a technical standpoint, but also intersect on issues of national security and environmental well-being.
The Green Design Institute examines these energy-environment intersections from a life cycle perspective, aiming to identify beneficial pathways for energy policy.
- Ethanol from corn would relieve some imports of foreign oil, but we can't replace ALL imported oil, and growing the crops for the ethanol creates other environmental impacts, namely water pollution. - Plug-in hybrid vehicles are an option, but they would put large demands on our electrical system. - Consumer choices of electronics, from light bulbs to big screen TVs, are also part of the puzzle.
This presentation is sure to inspire discussion and a new way of thinking about the items and resources we as consumers use every day.
When: Thursday, May 7, 2009 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Where: Trinity Commons 2230 Euclid Avenue Cleveland, OH 44115

Alumni Career Coaching Reception on Personal Branding
Location: 55 Broad Street Campus Time: 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business New York City Alumni Chapter
Speaker: Laura Tessinari, Senior Partner at Ogilvy & Mather and Fordham University professor Please join us as we welcome Senior Partner at Ogilvy & Mather and Fordham University professor, Laura Tessinari.
Personal Branding is an essential tool for thriving in the competitive work environment and one of today’s hottest career strategy topics. Our current business culture evolves daily and the need for people to develop strong, unique personal brands is a mandate for success, especially given the challenging economic times. "Brand YOU, Brand New™" will instantly help you:
Discover your true personal brand strengths and succinctly communicate them to your target audience (current employers, future employers, networking contacts, etc.)
- Identify and leverage your “valued” skills to differentiate you from the competition
- Increase your “career karma” - Adopt a “create” vs. “wait” mentality
This seminar will help set you apart from the “confused” mass of people forgetting the essential skills required to build a strong personal brand. Confusion is rampant as to what truly represents a strong personal brand in the quick-paced world in which we live. If you think a successful personal brand is built just from multiple numbers of LinkedIn connections or the most elaborate Facebook profile, then this event is for you! While social networks play an integral role in marketing and communicating your personal brand, an authentic personal brand is built on the clarity, consistency and relevant expression of core values. This event exposes participants to innovative learning techniques that unearth personal brand uniqueness through engaging and interactive exercises. Participants will leave with a strong understanding of the core brand strengths that make them both valued and marketable in their professional and personal life.

Carnegie Mellon Speaker on Energy and Environment Intersections
Location: The Oxford Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Sponsored by the Tepper School of Business Houston Alumni Chapter
Co-Sponsored By: Carnegie Mellon Houston Alumni Chapter
Speaker: Dr. Deanna H. Matthews, Research Associate in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University with the Green Design Institute Research CenterDr. Deanna H. Matthews, fellow alumna and Research Associate in Civil and Environmental Engineering, will speak to us about "Energy and Environment Intersections."
When: Wednesday, February 25, 2009 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
