Wine Country Harvest Festival

Location: Located approximately twenty miles east of Erie. North East PA

Transportation to this event will be provided via bus from the Cranberry Mall. The mall is located in Butler County at the intersection of routes 228 and 19. Park in the large open lot behind King's and look for the bus with Carnegie Mellon signs. The bus will leave at 7:30 a.m. and will arrive in North East around 9-9:30. The bus will leave North East at 5:00 p.m. to return to the Cranberry Mall.

Once again, we will be visiting the largest grape growing region in the East for the celebration of the 27th Annual Wine Country Harvest Festival! The activities include live entertainment, wine and food seminars, wine tasting, arts and craft shows, a farmers market and much more. Grape stomping is on the agenda, so - if you're in the mood - bring some old clothes that are ready to be ruined. The festival is held in two parks in North East. Free shuttle service will be provided between the parks with stops for antiquing and the Lake Shore Railway Museum. Free shuttle service is also provided to five of the wineries in the area and there is plenty of storage space on our bus to take home our purchases.

Bruce Babashan is the CEO of LeaderBridge. Prior to LeaderBridge Bruce was a senior member of one of the country’s five largest retained executive search firms and where he served in a variety of leadership roles including Executive Vice President, Managing Director-Los Angeles, Practice President, Member of The Senior Operations Committee, Chairman of the Internet/Web Strategy Group, Chair of the Strategic Re-engineering Project and lead member of the dispute resolution committee.

Bruce was always one of the firm’s top producers (top 10%) and was elected by his peers to the firm’s prestigious five man “Super Performance Committee.” In addition to this Bruce was also “tapped” to develop the firm’s internal sales training and mentoring program where, for three years while utilizing the program, the firm was recognized by the industry’s leading publication as “the fastest growing” (revenue production) national retained executive search firm in America.”

Bruce’s executive search practice is primarily focused on “C” level and “impact” positions and for clients in a wide spectrum of industries including, media, venture capital, real-estate, technology, professional services, telecom, financial services, gaming and hospitality, sports and entertainment, software and consumer packaged goods to name just a few.

Bruce is a member of Toastmasters and a USA Boxing Coach and the current coach for the Georgetown University Boxing Team (NCBA).

Bruce graduated from Salisbury State College with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies.

The New York Drama Alumni Clan is thrilled to offer you an exclusive invitation to the Carnegie Network Night! Open only to alumni of Carnegie Mellon University, this casting workshop will give you the chance to meet, audition, and get one-on-one advice from New York’s top casting directors.

Actors/MTs: you’ll be given the opportunity to have a Q & A session – find out things like what to look for in a headshot and what the new “not-to-dos” are. Then, you’ll audition for all four casting directors one-on-one – submit your headshot/resume and re-introduce yourself to the people between you and your next job. Finally, get feedback on how to improve your chances next time you’re in the room with them.

Directors/Playwrights: you’ll be given the opportunity to sit on the other side of the table – find out what the casting directors are looking for and improve your casting skills!

Finally, it’s a great chance for all the participants to meet each other, see each other’s work, and make some one-on-one connections with fellow colleagues and alums – always useful when you’re building (or looking for!) your next project!

Games occur rain or shine. Park rides and normal attractions will be closed. There will be private vendor companies at our pavilion who have paid for most of the snack food and alcoholic beverages, including alumni owned Purple Rose Tea Room who provides fresh baked scones and Scottish tea blends. If you have a need, please thank them through your patronage.

Price includes admission to the park, breakfast, lunch, snacks, and beverages all day at our pavilion. Idlewild Park rides and usual attractions will be closed. The park is filled with Highland Games attractions.

About Keith Lockhart

Keith Lockhart (CFA 1987) was named the 20th conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra in February, 1995. He is only the third person to hold this post since 1930, following the legendary Arthur Fiedler and John Williams. Lockhart was a remarkably young 35 when he was named conductor, the same age as Fiedler at the time of his appointment. In leading the organization, Lockhart has honored the orchestra’s proud history while breaking new ground at this venerable American institution.

Metro: Due to limited on-site parking and traffic concerns, it is recommended and encouraged that all spectators ride METRORAIL to the VAN NESS-UDC (Red Line) station with FREE shuttle service right outside. On-Site Paid Parking: $10 - (weather permitting) but availability is very limited and patrons are encouraged to utilize the FREE shuttle from the Van-Ness UDC Metro station and other off-site locations as their first option.
Free Shuttle Service - These shuttles are an easy way to beat the traffic. Shuttle service will begin one (1) hour prior to the start of matches each day and will run until one (1) hour after the completion of the last match and will operate every 10-12 minutes. Van Ness-UDC Metro station -- FREE tournament shuttles will be running between the Van Ness-UDC Metro station and the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center every day throughout the week of the tournament. The FREE shuttles will be open not only to METRO riders, but also to patrons who wish to park for FREE at the VAN NESS-UDC parking garage. Shuttle riders will be dropped off and picked up right outside the tournament's main gate. About the Play:
Samuel Beckett was born in Dublin in 1906 and has become, alongside James Joyce, one of the 20th Century's most iconic modernist writers. Possibly the most preeminent playwright of the Theatre of the Absurd, Beckett captures a sense of bewilderment, anxiety, and wonder in the face of an inexplicable universe in Godot. This "play about nothing" premiered in the English language in 1955 and continues to be a favorite for its witty dialogue, slapstick humor, and countless invitations for interpretation.

About the Director:
Robert McNamara is the artistic director for SCENA Theatre, and has directed for 20 seasons. A graduate of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, Robert earned an M. Litt degree in Classical languages. Also, he has lived and worked in the Ireland theater scene and is considered a Beckett expert. Robert received the 1996-97 Kennedy Center Fellowship of the Americas Award for Directing. His plays, Amelia, The Informer, Little Criminals, have been produced in Denmark, Australia, Indonesia, Slovenia, Austria and the US.

Diversity Discussion Background:

In March 2006, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) held their National Convention in Pittsburgh. Spearheaded by two professors in its College of Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University participated in the NSBE Convention by employing a three-prong strategy called “CMU@NSBE”. What might look like “outreach” or “service” to outside observers was really a plan to attract the nation’s top science and engineering talent to Carnegie Mellon. Perhaps shocking to some, this goal was built on the notion that Carnegie Mellon is actually a few degrees of separation away from being a top producer of underrepresented minority PhDs in engineering. Accomplishing such a feat would make us a magnet for attracting the nation’s top undergraduates, graduate students, and even faculty of color.

In concert with this effort is the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s recent selection of Carnegie Mellon as one of its sites for the Sloan PhD Program. Meanwhile, there has been growing concern at the national level about globalization and its effect on America’s weakening technological position. It turns out that the convergence of these events has put Carnegie Mellon right in the middle of a “perfect storm”, which has actually caused us to think deeply about the value of diversity in engineering and science. Is it really a value-added goal worth pursuing or just a noble gesture? The answer to this question might surprise you as its origin is rooted in the basic need for first achieving innovation, technological leadership, and uncompromising scholarship.

About the Presenters:

Shawn Blanton, Professor (ECE), Director of CSSI

Shawn Blanton is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University where he serves as director of the Center for Silicon System Implementation (CSSI), an organization consisting of 18 faculty members and over 80 students focused on the design and manufacture of silicon-based systems. He received the Bachelor's degree in engineering from Calvin College in 1987, a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1989 from the University of Arizona, and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1995. Professor Blanton’s research interests include the verification, test and diagnosis of integrated, heterogeneous systems. He has published over 70 papers in these areas and has several patents and pending patents in the area of IC test and diagnosis. Prof. Blanton has received the National Science Foundation Career Award for the development of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) testing methodology and two IBM Faculty Partnership Awards. He is a senior member of both the IEEE and ACM, and is the recipient of the 2006 Emerald Award for outstanding leadership in recruiting and mentoring minorities for advanced degrees in science and technology.

C. Fred Higgs III, Assistant Professor (MechE and ECE)

C. Fred Higgs, III is an assistant professor in the mechanical engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his doctorate in mechanical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in thermal fluids and tribology. Prior to coming to Carnegie Mellon, he completed a postdoctorate at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. A faculty member in the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC), Center for Silicon System Implementation (CSSI), and an affiliated faculty member in the electrical and computer engineering (ECE) department, he has been an invited speaker in numerous venues, including the International Conference on Abrasive Processes, International VLSI/ULSI Multilevel Interconnection Conference, Hitachi GST, Texas Instruments, and Intel. He is an Associate Editor of the STLE Tribology Transactions journal, in addition to being the lead organizer of the 2009 Materials Research Society Annual Spring Meeting CMP Symposium. In 2007, he was recipient of the NSF CAREER award for the nation’s top investigators who are junior faculty. Prof. Higgs is also the director of the Carnegie Mellon Sloan PhD Program, which is sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for the purpose of supporting minority graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering and science.
